Shock claim humans could be extinct in ONE YEAR after Leicester’s Prem title win : Statistics boff Dr Fergus Simpson, who works at the University of Barcelona, made the shock doomsday claims in an academic paper. He claimed there is a one in 500 chance of humans becoming extinct in the next 12 months.
In his paper Apocalypse Now? Reviving The Doomsday Argument, Dr Simpson warned of a 0.2% chance of a “global catastrophe” wiping out the human race in any year.
He said forecasting the fate of the human race has divided the scientific community and other doomsday theorists have been more pessimistic in their predictions.
In worrying claims British astronomer Sir Martin Rees said there was a 50% chance of humans failing to see out the end of the 21st century.
But Dr Simpson estimated the likelihood of humans becoming extinct by 2100 at 13%.
He wrote: “Our key conclusion is that the annual risk of global catastrophe currently exceeds 0.2%.
“In a year when Leicester City FC were crowned Premier League champions, we are reminded that events of this rarity can prove challenging to anticipate, yet they should not be ignored.”
Dr Simpson’s calculation used the Doomsday Argument which some say can predict the number of humans in the future based on the number of people born so far.
Previously Dr Simpson used a mathematical model to reveal the massive size of giant aliens.
Dr Simpson said he finds the doomsday prediction “a little bit depressing”, but said he is already aware that Earth is doomed in five billion years because of the impending death of the sun.
“I am acutely aware that existence is finite,” he told Sun Online. Source: dailystar
